Homebrewers and clubs Get your brew on and bring your best! Perfect Brewing in Libertyville and Nightshade and Dark’s Pandemonium Brewing in downtown Waukegan present Besley’s Homebrew Festival and competition. There will be two components to the event: First will be a standard BJCP style judged competition. Perfect Brewing in Libertyville will organize drop off locations and judging for that portion. Beers will be dropped off at Perfect Brewing in Libertyville for judging awards will be announced the day of the festival. To register for the BJCP sanctioned competition go here: https://besleyshomebrew.brewcompetition.com/
Second, we will be set up in the street in front of Nightshade and Dark’s in Waukegan. We will be selling limited judging/tasting tickets to the public. Judging will be by paid ticket holders as well as a select panel of professionals. Each beer will accumulate points both from the public and our panel. Winners in categories will get prizes. Members of clubs will accumulate points for their club as well, with club prizes being awarded including a fresh dump bourbon barrel from Oppidan Spirits. Tents will be set up so the event goes on rain or shine (but probably not severe weather, at which point we will move indoors to the best of our ability). There will be a pig roast and other food available as well as entertainment. Festivities will start at 4pm and continue until 10pm. Use the registration link below. As details are finalized you will be contacted via email with them
From 1856 to 1913 Besley’s Waukegan Brewing Company Grew to a Lake County juggernaut producing upwards of 50,000 barrels a year at their peak. In addition to a myriad of traditional English beers styles they adapted to the times in the early 20th century with such brands as “Besley’s Home Brew”, acknowledging the trend in home brewing to circumvent the Temperance movement. Our competition logo uses a high resolution scan of an original unused label as its base. If you’d like to learn more about Besley’s Waukegan Brewing and its history, read it HERE.
